What is a Dental Emergency?

Being a dental care for years in Islamabad, we advise our patients to always take preemptive measures and regular checkups and dental cleaning procedures in order to avoid any dental emergencies. That being said, there are times when unforeseen dental problems do occur and patients want them rectified.

There are a couple of ways to tell if you're having a dental emergency, for instance, if you broke, lost a tooth in an accident, or if you're experiencing intense tooth pain it's better to call us immediately and we'll schedule an appointment for you right away.

On the other hand, if you chipped a tooth and there's mild to no discomfort you can postpone the treatment for a day or two maximum. However, to be on the safe side, you must schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible.

If you are experiencing mild sensitivity whenever you're eating or drinking something hot/cold, you can schedule an appointment with us after a day or two.

  • Prolonging pain due to consuming hot and cold food/drinks
  • Severe toothache that doesn't get resolved even after taking analgesics
  • Swelling in and around the gums

Types of Dental Emergencies

  • Dental Abscess

These are the worst and are painful. According to the NHS, a dental abscess is a collection that is formed inside of the tooth. Dental abscesses can develop due to a failed root canal treatment, a carious lesion inside the tooth, and even a fractured tooth.

On the other hand, a gum abscess develops because of periodontal diseases. A piece of food stuck between your teeth and gums can also cause a gum abscess. Due to hormonal changes, pregnant women are predisposed to get a gum abscess.

The most common signs of a dental/gum abscess are intense shooting pain and a ball of pus around the infected area. Most of our patients describe that pain as a throbbing pain and, laying down makes it worse. Other common symptoms that our patients have reported are:

  • Radiating pain
  • Bad breath
  • Sensitive to touch
  • Intense pain when chewing from the affected side

A dental/gum abscess requires immediate dental care. Delaying any procedures to get rid of the abscess might lead to an increase in the severity of the pain, spreading of the infection, and in the process harming other teeth and might even give you a fever.

Drainage of the abscess and a prescription of antibiotics are our dentists' first go tos. However, treatments may vary from patient to patient. Our dentists always recommend a follow-up visit for a comprehensive treatment plan.

In some cases, our dentists might even recommend an immediate root canal treatment or extraction of the tooth.

  • Infections

There are many kinds of infections, an abscess is just a kind. Gum diseases or in other words Periodontitis/ Gingivitis take months to develop and if left untreated can turn into a dental emergency. This type of infection can occur because of loss of bone, mobility of multiple teeth, and plaque or calculus deposits.

If this type of dental emergency isn't looked after it might lead to tooth loss.

  • Traumatic Dental Injuries

If you bite your lip by mistake, usually that isn't considered a dental emergency but still may require care.

However, if you happen to bite your tongue, that might require urgent care. If the tongue injury is so severe that it's bleeding profusely, we recommend visiting the emergency room of a hospital.

Most commonly, children and teenagers are likely to be involved in a traumatic injury because they're involved in physical activities, and in comparison, their bone isn't as dense as adults. Traumatic injury in this age cohort usually occurs because of sports activities, accidents, and falls.

If you get a tooth knocked out of position or is completely avulsed from the bone, it will require immediate dental care by our dentists. Ideally, you should visit us within 30 minutes of the accident and bring the tooth with you.

If your tooth gets completely knocked out, you should pick it up from the crown and not from the roots, avoid harsh cleaning and try to replace it back into the socket, if you're unable to do that we recommend placing the avulsed tooth in a cup of milk and bring it with you to us.

For preventive measures, we recommend our patients wear mouthguards to prevent such injuries.

If you experienced a dental injury where you're bleeding profusely we recommend avoiding rinsing and applying pressure to the affected area. Also, avoid cleaning that area as that may inhibit clotting of the wound.

  • Cracked, Chipped, Or Broken Tooth

Accidental injuries, eating crunchy food and tooth decay are the most common reasons to crack or break a tooth.

If you're not involved in a traumatic injury and have a chipped tooth, it's unlikely that you might require urgent dental care and the treatment can be delayed for a day. However, chipped teeth are unpleasing to the eye and some of our patients do want an immediate solution for it. Some fractures of these chipped teeth might even extend to the roots of certain teeth and in that case, hence classifying it as a dental emergency.

  • Loose fillings Or Dislodged Crowns

If you lost a dental filling or a crown, it must be addressed immediately. For instance, if you lose a crown of a tooth that was root canal treated, it's highly unlikely that you will have any hot or cold sensation or pain because the nerves are dead however, that tooth is susceptible to a fracture and an immediate replacement is necessary.

What are the risks of not treating a Dental Emergency?

If you have a dental emergency you can schedule a visit with us by calling us.

Delaying any procedures might make the condition worse and might lead to tooth loss. In case you chipped a tooth and you have a social gathering that you have to attend you can schedule an appointment with our emergency dentist during our working hours.

If you have a dental infection, there's a chance that the pus might lead to other parts of your body and can have deleterious effects such as nausea, fever, severe pain, and cluster headaches.

How do you prevent a dental emergency?

You can easily prevent dental emergencies. For example, dental abscesses usually occur because of poor oral hygiene and unaddressed dental cavities. Visiting us for a routine checkup after every 6 months can help you avoid getting a dental infection.

Furthermore, you should follow good oral hygiene and modify your diet. Also, replacing your toothbrush after every 3 months or when the brush bristles wear off has helped many of our patients.

Wearing a mouth guard during sports activities can prevent minor injuries and dental trauma.

Avoiding hard, sticky foods especially if you have gone through various dental treatments can also prevent you from getting a chipped tooth.
